Some basic questions may be answered by telephone. We will refer you to the correct office if necessary. We do not “guess” where to refer you. “Guessing” to get rid of someone irritates us, too. So we may ask some questions to understand what you really need. Answer our questions so we may properly direct you.
We will try to assist you. But we cannot act as your attorney. When we suggest you contact an attorney, think about the following. “We work here and have attorneys prepare our documents rather than do it ourselves.”
Information which requires searching, including Freedom of Information Requests, Vital Records, and some other items must be made in writing. These requests may be mailed to the Hancock County Clerk:

or in-person from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM weekdays except holidays at the Hancock County Clerk, 500 Main Street, Second Floor, Room 7, Carthage, Illinois 62321. Costs for copies are stated on this website according to document type. When applicable, state law may override county service charges and fees.
